Chesapeake Sport Pilot Open House

Chesapeake Sport Pilot Open House

Chesapeake Sport Pilot Open House

The annual Chesapeake Sport Pilot Open House is a celebration at the end of our summer training season and beginning of the winter season. We host Wings seminars for pilots, airplane rides for the neighborhood children, and a picnic for all. I am the primary coordinator for this event, in charge of arranging speakers, organizing the rides, arranging the picnic, and marketing the event. It is a fun day for new and returning customers as well as the neighboring community.

Searey Docking System

Searey Docking System

Restoration of the Havre de Grace SPB

I have been working with the owners of Havre de Grace seaplane base to develop a docking system for flying boats at the base. The original docks were destroyed by the elements. The new system I helped develop with the E-Z Dock company will be weatherproof and able to be replicated across the Chesapeake Bay.

2013 and 2014 Tangier Holly Run

I am pleased to announce that in large part due to my hard work, Santa Claus has selected Chesapeake Sport Pilot as his Mid Atlantic reindeer and elf staging ground. I have been appointed Chief Elf for all related activities.

The Holly Run is a 47 year old Mid Atlantic tradition where general aviation pilots from throughout the region deliver boughs of holly and Santa Claus to the isolated people of Tangier Island. Tangier is a small community in the middle of the Chesapeake Bay. The only access to this island is by boat or small aircraft. Sea level rise has flooded the island with salt water and killed most of the trees on the island so pilots deliver holly to the residents each year for Christmas decorating.

The original organizer Ed Nabb Sr. passed away many years ago and his son Ed Nabb Jr. ran the event for many years after that. When I spoke to Ed Jr. in 2009 he was burned out and ready to retire from the run. I offered to take over for him. I moved the staging of the event up to our airport and added in a morning breakfast with Santa to give us time to stage and brief. Craig Fuller and later Mark Baker kindly accepted the job of sleigh driver with the AOPA Caravan and I arranged the call sign of "Rudolph One" for him through the good folks at Potomac Approach. We have quite a merry time and the tradition continues!

Part 103 Club Meeting

The finalization of the sport pilot rule inadvertently shut down flight training for ultralight pilots. This has decimated the ultralight industry and dramatically decreased safety. The FAA has their head in the sand about this problem and refuses to issue functional LODA guidance or other work arounds.

With the EAA's help I held a stakeholders meeting at Oshkosh this summer to discuss using the flying club rules as a work around.

Chesapeake Sport Pilot Flying Club

Chesapeake Sport Pilot Flying Club

Established CSP Flying Club

When I bought the school this year I decided I wanted to restructure it to include a flying club for rated pilots. Everyone dreams of traveling on trips after they get their rating but it is difficult to support this in a flight school since the planes loose money when sitting on a ramp someplace and they are always needed at home for flight training. I helped a group of our renters set up an independent, equity based flying club and sold them a plane for such. Now students can look forward to graduating, joining the club, and taking trips.

Plane Pull

I organized the Chesapeake Sport Pilot team for the 2014 Dulles Plane Pull.  We ran a static display about general aviation and helped pull a cargo plane across the ramp to support the Special Olympics. This event is a fantastic opportunity for our sport pilots to get their Class Bravo endorsements.

Young Eagles

Young Eagles

While the EAA lawyers won't allow our flight school to officially co-host Young Eagles with our EAA friends, CSP customers and staff do regularly take off our flight school hats and put on our EAA hats to serve as members of the local EAA chapter and host Young Eagle flights at our airport. I am generally the primary organizer for these events.
